Owl Box Activity Log (weekly observation notes diary)

Cartoon sailor steering a ship during a storm with an owl watching through a porthole.
Captain’s log…Starting Date 2022!

1/30/22 – First owl starts to visit the box, stops by every day for two weeks.

2/12/22 – Male and female owls start nesting together in the box. Female stays in the box.

2/28/22 – First egg appeared. Then one new egg every three days. Male brings mice in several times per night every night continuously.

3/12/22 – Egg five appeared, no more after that.

4/3/22 – First egg hatches.

4/6/22 – Second egg hatches. Unfortunately…..the first two died later in the day; not sure the reason, although we had a 100 degree heat wave just after they hatched.

4/11/22 – Third egg hatches, then 4/12/22 the fourth egg hatches.  Below is a picture of the two new little ones.  These two appear to be doing well.  Now egg five is the only one left waiting to hatch.

4/23/22 – About a week later the two “kids” have more than quadrupled in size and are sitting upgright instead of only being able to lay face down! Latest picture below. Egg five never hatched but it is still there.

4/27/22 – They are doubling in size every couple of days now! Instead of being fed my “Mama” they are eating whole mice by themselves.  “Papa” visits several times a night bringing in more mice.

4/29/22 – The fifth egg has now “disappeared”!  Got a shot of one of the kids swallowing a whole mouse.

5/2/22 – The little ones are now growing feathers and starting to look more like mature owls (see picture below)

5/9/22 – Major change:  after baby sitting the kids in the box 24/7 since hatching mama owl left the box; they are now on their own. But…not abandoned: papa owl still comes by every night dropping off the mice treats!

5/11/22 – The kids are now almost half the size of the parents and they are showing mature wings and they are standing up walking around, previously they would mostly be sitting since they had poor balance. Latest picture below is from 5/11/22

5/21/22 – The papa owl is still coming by every night and dropping off “mice body treats”, but sometimes later than normal and the kids waiting eagerly at the front.  They are still growing and look almost the same size as the parents.  They may be leaving the nest soon! Latest picture below from 5/21/22.

6/6/22 – Not much changed in the last two weeks except the growth rate has continued, they are both now about the same size as the adults. They seem to now be more interested in looking out the entrance hole rather than jumping around in the back of the box. I have also added camera #4 to view the outside of the box from the shed.  Picture below with the 6/6/22 timestamp shows the view inside the box and the daytime outside view of the box.

6/8/22 – Added a night time view picture of the box from the new camera (located by the shed solar panels).  The built in IR night vision LEDs light up most of the view but the box is still too dark.  Today I added a small solar powered garden light pointed up close to the box to get more light on it.  Hopefully I can get some night time “action” pics before they leave the box ….which could be any day now! Plan B: this camera will act as a good wild life cam to see what else is happening down there in the dark bottom corner of the yard.

6/9/22 -Bingo! Action started:  first of the two young (2 months old) owls left the box while I watched the live feed.  Got cell phone pics and videos of the first flight. Seems like he is a “rookie” and had trouble flying and getting up into the adjacent pine tree then back to the box roof.  Seemed like he wanted to get back in the box (too scary out there?) but is not skilled enough like the adult to get into the entrance hole with no perch (for safety from predators). A few hours later he took off into the night.  So I decided to build a temporary front porch perch for when the second owl comes out and wants to get back in.

6/10/22 – The next night the second young owl did venture out.  This one had the option to jump onto the front porch perch before flying around the box.  And he did decide life was too rough out there and he came back to the perch and into the box for the rest of the night!  A picture of both owls adventure is shown below side by side.  However……unbelievable as it was the first owl returned to the roof of the box in mid day sunlight!  He could not get in still because I did not have the new front perch (on a hinge) swung up into position.  When I went down there to set up the perch I got a close up shot of him (shown below) before he flew away.  This may be the end of the owl show saga for this season.  I will be monitoring to see if the second owl stays in the box longer or if he takes off for good.

6/11/22 through 6/14/22 – Both of the young owls have left the box but one or the other has been returning to the box every day (one time both visited at the same time). Sometimes one stays in the box during the day and then leaves again several times at night. The new front perch may be the reason they come back.

6/15/22 – One of the two owls was found dead on the ground this morning about 100ft from the box.  Not sure what happened.  Did it make a “rookie” mistake and a critter ambushed it? But the next day the second owl came back to the box. 6/16 to 6/17 the second owl visited only on the box roof or front perch several times each night and no longer goes inside the box. Maybe this is the end of season one!

6/18/22 – 6/29/22 – The owl has kept coming back to visit the box almost every night several times per night. He did not appear only two times (maybe he was partying at the winery boxes?!?!).  The owl only stays on the roof, there has been no activity inside the box since 6/17/22. Once or twice I could hear the audio feed of the squawking but could not see him on the roof, until….at sunup I could see him at the falcon perch (in the upper left as shown in the photo below).

6/30/22-8/2/22 – No owl activity seen inside the box or on the roof. Maybe now it is really…the end of “season one” of the owl show! I may possibly add a standalone rooftop motion sensor while the box is empty; right now I can only detect motion when an owl enters the box and the inside camera detects it.  Stretch goal: for next year build a bigger box for the front yard with all of the upgrades/lessons learned from this backyard box: change position or add a second inside camera so the owls don’t block the view of “the action”, provide more room in case more babies survive by “adding rooms?”, provide a front perch setup that is easier to enable/disable for safety of the baby owls, have rooftop and inside dedicated motion sensors to reduce the false alarm motion detection of the camera processing.

8/3/22 – 9/20/22 – Still no owl activity.  Lots of pictures of coyotes passing under the box though.

9/21/22 -11/13/22 – No activity. But now with the longer nights the charge controller sometimes shuts down the load when it detects the voltage going below the critical 11.1V trip level just before the sun comes up. Turned off camera #4 to reduce the power consumption. Later had to turn off camera #3 as well.  Battery may be going south as well after a year and a half of cycling it every day continuously. Also…with the sun lower in the sky the charging is starting a couple of hours later than sunrise due to shading from a large pine tree next to the panels.

11/14/22 – At 5:56pm one owl was detected (one motion detect snapshot was seen). Other than that appearance for a couple of minutes there has been no further activity all month.  Usually the owls start to come by in late January so this early appearance is new.

11/15/22 -12/23/22 – No activity. To fix the power shutdown problem the 100 Ahr AGM battery was replaced with the same capacity Lithium Iron Phosphate battery.  Now even with all four cameras running the power stays on all night with about a 20% or 30% charge level by morning when charging starts again.

12/26/22 – Motion detection pictures are coming in showing owl visits 3 days in a row. On 12/28/22 they visited four times during the night.  I happened to be watching the real time feed when a second owl came in (the female?) for a few seconds while the male was squawking the mating call. They are starting one month ealier than last season.  New pictures will be posted later after I reduce the size/amount of the old pictures below from last season.

********* 2023  Season  **********

12/29/22 -1/3/23 – Female owl stays in the box all day long..she must be “expecting”!  The male owl visits the box for a few seconds several times every night.

1/4/23 – Male owl brings in the first “mouse body” treat for the female as well as continuing multiple visits to the box every night.

1/5/23 – 1/11/23 – Female owl continues to stay in the box all day long and the male owl visits several times per night bringing in mouse bodies.  I almost forgot to tilt down the front perch, I am going by the box design document that a front perch is not desireable since it could make it easier for predators to get at the babies. I wanted to tilt it down before the box was occupied but they came in earlier than I expected.  I tilted it down on 1/7/23 during the day and the noise spooked the owl and she flew out of the box! But luckily she came back that night and had no trouble entering the box without the perch in place.  Same for the male, he came in later several times as usual so he didn’t care that the perch was gone.

1/12/23 – 1/21/23 – Same routine every day: the male owl makes 4 to 6 visits every night and most times has a mouse body “treat” to hand off to the female. During the day and sometimes at night the female does some scratching of the floor mulch and scratching against the walls. She has been in there for three weeks with no eggs yet (last season they appeared at about two weeks).

1/22/23 – Spoke too soon…..today egg number one appeared.

1/24/23 – Today egg number two appeared. Morning temperatures have been in the 32 to 35 degree (F) range. The owls don’t seem to care about weather conditions, rain or shine the mouse bodies keep coming in multiple times every night.  The female even leaves the nest for a few minutes at different times during the night.

1/26/23 – Egg number three appears, then on 1/28/23 egg number four appears.  Setting a two day per egg pace this year instead of a three day per egg pace last year.

1/30/23 – Egg number five appears…tied with last season! Will she keep going and break the old record?!?!?

2/2/23 – Answer: yes……egg number six appears to break the egg count record.  New picture is below.  Older pictures from last season are still shown further down; this season is essentially a repeat of last season (so far) except for the new egg count record

2/4/23 – Another new record…egg number seven appears.

2/20/23 – No change, staying at seven eggs, Mr. Owl has been bringing mouse bodies in every night as usual.

2/24/23 – First egg hatches.  2/26/23 – second egg hatches.

2/28/23 -Third egg hatches. But fourth egg does not hatch until 3/5/23, a 3 day delay from the normal every two days.

3/7/23 – Fifth egg hatches, back on the two day schedule again. All five are active and Papa owl is bringing in plenty of mice on the nightly visits.

3/10/23 – Bad news in the box today: the two newest ones (number 4 and 5) have disappeared leaving only the three older/larger ones.  I can only speculate that they have ended up in the stomach of the largest one which has just started eating whole mice in one gulp.  The two new ones were only about 1/5 the size of the largest kid. Below is a picture of the remaining three with unhatched eggs number 6 and 7; Mama owl is no longer sitting on the eggs so it appears she gave up on them (over a week late in hatching, so it appears they will never hatch now).

3/16/23 – More bad news in the box: Around 8pm a predator owl came into the box and attacked the three little ones while mama owl was out (she seems to leave for a couple of hours at 7:30pm every day). I saw it on the live feed.  So I acted like the SWAT team and I ran down to the bottom of the hill with a broom stick and started banging on the box to try to get the predator owl to leave, which he did after a few moments.  When I came back in the house to look at the live feed one of the owlets was dead already and the other two appeared alive and moving. Then around 8:30pm an owl landed on the roof, a few seconds later another owl came and attacked it (probably the predator owl again).  There was a fight for a few minutes and then one owl flew away (defeated?).  I am not sure which owl was left as the winner since it then took off and did not come into the box.  Mama owl did come back into the box at 9:30pm as usual with a mouse body treat.  Things seemed to go back to normal at this point. (now this may explain the killing of the first two owlets on 3/10/23, it was probably done by the same predator owl but I was not watching the live feed when that attack probably happened).

3/17/23 – The two little ones seem to be acting like normal except now I noticed after watching them that they did get injured in the attack: both of them appear to be limping and have trouble balancing/staying upgright from some damage that must have been done to one leg.  Below is the latest picture of the family of three now.

3/22/23 – The owl family is acting like usual with multiple mouse bodies being brought in every night and no further attacks from the “outlaw owl” predator.  The two unhatched eggs are still there being rolled around to different positions every day. However…..one new behavior I see is that now there is a build up of debris covering half the entrance hole; has mama owl turned into a hoarder?!?!?!.  Or is she partially blocking the entrance to slow down the predator owl?

3/25/23 – The BIG DAY: Mama owl did not return from her nightly trip.  She appears to have left the young ones to be on their own, no baby sitting required any more.  Now she just visits a couple of times during the night and stays out during the day just like last season.  The Papa owl is also still visiting several times a night and dropping off mice bodies so the youngsters are still getting their meals. I have tilted up the front perch now so if the yougsters try to fly out they can get back in.  Also I notice the big pile of debris that was blocking the entrance hole is gone…and the two eggs have disappeared: house cleaning must be complete now….

3/28/23 – No changes other than the small one is now gulping down whole mice like a pro! Before the bigger one was snatching up the mice that came in before the smaller one had a chance to get any food; seems to have stunted the growth of the small one but now he appears to be growing since he is getting his chance at more food.

3/31/23 – The predator owl returned at 4:50am and attacked the young ones again but for some reason he left after only a minute so they both survived and appear to be OK.

4/2/23 – The predator owl returned again at around 1am according to the motion detection pictures but unfortunately this time he stayed long enough to complete his “mission” and he killed both of the young owls. Multiple pictures showed he returned several times over the next several hours so that when I viewed the real time feed at 5:30am the only thing left was a few feathers.  I would say this is the end of season 2, however……….just before 6am Mama owl came in with a mouse body to drop off and saw the box was empty, so she ate the body and left; then she came back around 7am even though it was light out and stayed in the box all day. She left after it got dark but for the first time in months I heard her making the mating call sound, so maybe she is planning on starting a new nest already after realizing what happened.

4/4/23 –  She was doing the mating call again and it looks like it worked since a male owl came in and “stayed the night” so both were still in the box during the day time. The next night the male owl appeared to be gone and the female owl is staying in the box every day and only goes out at night like she did after the previous mating.

4/6/23 – 4/15/23 – Back to the same routine with either the male or the female bringing in mouse bodies several times during the night and just the female staying in the box during the day.  This appears to be…...the start of season 3. There may be a new set of eggs appearing soon

4/26/23-5/6/23 – The male owl came in again and this time he stayed in during the day ten days in a row; this is new behavior since previously the male owl would only stay one day; looks like he is “shacking up” with Mrs Owl this time!

5/7/23 – Male owl did not stay in the box the next day for the first time since he started staying each day on 4/26/23.  Maybe Ms. Owl kicked him out because…..today a new egg appeared!  Looks like season 3 of nesting is now official. On 5/8/23 after daylight the male owl again did not show up.  Only “Mama” owl is now in the box during the day and is sitting on the egg.

5/16/23 – Same thing was repeated every two days for a week: a new egg would appear/the male owl only visits at night: now there is a total of five eggs in the box.

5/18/23 – Total of six eggs.  No more new eggs as of 6/6/23. Now we wait for the hatching party to begin. Male owl is still visiting every night. Ms. Owl is sitting on the eggs all day long except when she is fidgiting and looking out the door every once in awhile.  For some reason she leaves every night for just a couple of minutes after sundown and is back on the eggs at all other times.

6/9/23 – First egg hatches, 6/10/23 – second egg hatches, 6/11/23 – third egg hatches, 6/14/23 – fourth eggs hatches, 6/16/23 – fifth egg hatches, 6/19/23 – 6th egg hatches…DONE!

6/20/23 – All six youngsters appear healthy; Ms Owl has a tough time trying not to step on them. A new record, no “dud” eggs that did not hatch this time.

6/21-6/24 – All the youngsters are doing well and growing fast; eating lots of “mice body treats”.

6/25/23 – Here we go again: bad news in the box! The two youngest of the six have suddenly disapeared.  No sign of the predator in any of the motion detection shots so I can’t say who did the deed! So now the 3 biggest ones and the 4th medium size one are left; the medium sized one now has become the new small fry, much smaller than the other 3 but he was still way bigger than the two small fry that disappeared.  All four youngsters appear to be doing well as of 6/29/23.

7/2/23 – And again:bad news! Another one disappears, but it was one of the bigger ones.  Now only the two big ones and the much smaller one are left.  Not sure what happened.

7/3-7/11 – All three continue to grow, two large ones and the smaller one about 1/4 their size.  They are starting to hang out by the entrance hole now.  The two big ones may be getting ready to fly out.

7/14/23 – All three are still in the box, but for the first time I saw one of them go out on the front perch and then come back in the box. And he went out there the next day as well, but appeared to come back in after a few minutes.  Maybe he is building up the courage to take the leap off the edge…….

7/17/23 – Only see two yougsters in the box now! Can’t say for sure but most likely the one that was exploring the front perch decided to try flying out.  I don’t think Mr. Predator got any of the young owls this time  Still two in the box at sunup on 7/18 and 7/19.  Peak daytime temps are 99 to 100 this week and the remaining two are staying in the front partition area in front of the entrance hole during the day trying to get the breeze.

7/21/23 – Now only one yougster is left in the box! Adult owls are still dropping off mice bodies for him.  He is very large now, almost adult size.

7/23/23 – The last youngster is out!  A motion detection capture picture shows he was there at 4am today.  When I checked the live feed at 5:30am the box was empty.

7/24/23 –  No night time activity motion detected anymore. This is now the end of season 3. I will call it successful, the last three young ones flew out on their own. Time to start working on the design of box number 2 to be installed in the front yard.

7/25/23-8/22/23 – Unlike previous seasons with no visits by owls in during until around December/January there has been one to two owls visiting the box briefly about twice per week; It may be the start of a new season 4.

8/23/23 – Another new record:  Two owls visited inside the box around 8pm and then a third owl landed on the front perch (never more than two owls at the box before). The owls inside the box seemed to sound angry, maybe the third owl was the predator owl?!?!  Maybe the predator owl did not want to take on two adults in a fight so after a few minutes he flew away and never went inside the box.

8/24/23-11/19/23 – Back to normal with one or two owls visiting the front perch or coming inside the box for a few minutes then leaving at about twice per week. So it looks like it is not the start of a new season 4 yet.

11/20/23 – Back to the winter problem of last year with the sun being blocked by the pine tree in the morning so the battery voltage runs low and the controller shuts it down. Temporary solution: I have turned off the outside camera to save power (no more roof perch viewing, only the inside box camera is runnung).  This gives a couple more hours of battery life to reach the 10am time the sun starts hitting the panels.  I am building a new solar panel support frame on the other side of the tree which will elminate the shading.  The new support will also hold 4 panels instead of 2 to give better low light performance (they will all be in series).

11/22/23 – 11/26/23 – One owl has been visiting the box multiple times per night every day for the last four days.  Another owl is usually in the tree nearby or on the roof or perch.  The owl inside is doing the mating call when the other owl is close by. This is now the start of season 4. The nesting “shenanigans” may start at any time.

11/27/23 – 1/2/32 – The male and female owls have been visiting the box many times each night and sometimes the male stays in the box with female during the day. So at some time there must have been on official mating taking place since:

1/3/24 – The first egg has appeared in the box!     1/5/24 – Second egg appears!   1/7/24 – Third egg appears!

1/28/24 – She stopped at three eggs.  Male owl visits several times every night and the female stays in the box sitting on the eggs 24/7.  Getting close to the first hatching, it typically happens one month after the egg appears.

2/4/24 – The first egg has hatched! (Since the pictures from the new season are pretty much identical to the previous seasons I am not posting more pictures, the picture summary below is being repeated over and over!). 2/7/24 – Second egg has hatched.

2/21/24 – Third egg never hatched.  It is still getting moved around as the youngsters are being fed several times a day.  Mouse bodies are being brought in every night with multiple visits from the male; so the young ones are almost doubling in size every other day just like previous seasons.

3/7/24 – The youngsters are still growing every day and are maybe two thirds adult size; they are now gulping down whole mice in a matter of seconds. “Mama” owl is still baby sitting them staying in the box all day long and only going out at night to get more mice treats.  The dud third egg was still seen until now it has finally disappeard.

3/11/24 – The BIG DAY:  The mother owl has finally left the box, leaving the two youngsters alone during the day.  They may be flying out soon.  With more sun during the day I have turned on the second camera facing the outside of the box so I can see what is happening again on the roof.  I have not added more solar panels yet so I had the second camera off to keep the battery from draining during the night.  Battery voltage is staying good 24hrs now with both cameras on.

3/30/24 – Those “kids” are still in the box! I say they are typical lazy youngsters taking advantage of all the free “mice bodies” being brought in every night by the parents! They are starting to flap their wings banging against the walls getting ready for flight…maybe.

4/7/24 – The next BIG DAY.  The two youngsters have finally flown out of the box under their own power.  However, the next two days they came back, not ready to get a job and live out on their own, they like living at home with the parents supplying them with free mice bodies!

4/12/24 – The young ones seemed to have left for good but a few days later the adults came back with mating calls and it appears that season 5 has begun already.  4/16-4/27 Two owls are staying in the box during the day with “mating shenanigans” going on so it looks like it is only a matter of time before another batch of eggs will be coming.

5/1-5/6 – Still two owls in the box during the day and at night they go out and bring in new mouse body “treats” to eat.

5/7/24 – First egg appears!  5/9/24 – Second egg appears. 5/11/24 – Third egg appears. 5/13/24 – Fourth egg appears. 5/15/24 – Fifth egg appears. 5/18/24 – sixth egg appears! 5/31/24 – She stopped at six eggs this time, now waiting for the hatching party to begin…..

6/7/24 – First egg has hatched! 6/9/24 – Second egg hatches. 6/11/24 – Third egg hatches. 6/12/24 – Fourth egg hatches. 6/14/24 – Fifth egg hatches. 6/17/24 – Sixth egg hatches.

6/23/24 – Six youngsters total this time.  Looks like they all survived two days of the 100 degree heat wave.  Below is one current picture of two of them sticking their heads out of the entrance hole trying to get some relief from the heat.  Note they are up high, there appears to be several inches of debris built up from the floor so they can go right up to the hole (now there is risk of them falling out if they look out over the edge too far!

6/25/24 – Here we go again:  now I only see 5 youngsters in the box!  The “elder” largest one has disappeared mysteriously; I don’t think he was mature enough to fly yet.

7/2/24 – Now the other large youngster has left the box leaving only four.  This time I think he left on his own since he looked ready to fly.

7/5/24 – Now the two medium size youngsters have disappeared mysteriously: camera motion capture shots do not show anything; can’t say if it was the predator owl again or if they may have just accidentally walked out the entrance hole since they still have all that debris piled up in front of it.

7/6/24 – The two small ones are left and are growing well; looks like “Mama” had decided to leave the box and now only visits at night leaving the youngsters alone all day

7/17/24 – The two youngsters are still in the box, they look fully mature, large and ready to fly, but….they seem to want to stay in the box and get the free meals being dropped off every night!  Typical lazy teenagers again!

7/22/24 – First youngster left the box, I saw him on the ground hopping around on the live feed. 7/24/24 – second youngster left the box, did not get to seem him live but now there is no longer any motion detected activity pictures inside the box and I no longer hear the constant chirps they make at night anymore.  Now season 5 has ended; I believe with three successful fly outs.

7/25/24 – Cleaned out the box while it is empty before they start nesting again. Now I see my mistake: I should have cleaned it out at least once each year instead of going three years.  There was approximately 4 inches of hard packed mouse body parts/debris! So the floor was rising about 1 inch per year.  See two pictures below.  Opening the side cleanout door did nothing with a solid wall of debris, I had to chip out and break up the debris before I could sweep it out the side door. This may explain some of the missing youngsters: normally the floor is 5 inches below the opening hole, with the debris the floor was only an inch below the openeing so the “kids” could have walked out the hole accidentally.

10/26/24 though 11/30/24 – In between nesting sessions there have been visits to the front perch or the top of the box once or twice a week for the last several months.  They stay there usually for only a couple of minutes.  But I believe this means the box is still on their short list for the next time they want to start a new nest (typically in November/December).

12/2/24 – BINGO! Today an owl came back inside the box at 5:45am just before sunrise and stayed in the box all day.  Something different though: motion detection pictures show no mating activity with another owl, so she must have done the mating somewhere else then came into this box for laying the eggs. If this is true then eggs should be dropping in about one month.  She left at sundown today. This should be the start of season 6.

12/4/24 – Two more days in a row, she came back at 6am to stay in the box all day and then again always leaves at sundown.

12/14/24 – Not just the one but two owls have been coming back to stay in the box all day consistently/every day for the last two weeks. They both leave at sundown as usual.  Expecting to see some eggs pretty soon.  This is different behavior since previously just the female owl would be staying in the box all day long.

12/15/24 through 1/31/25 – Same behavior all month and no eggs to be seen. Looks like they are in the box but not doing any actual mating

2/1/25 through 2/6/25 – Behavior has changed slightly, now they are coming in multiple times during the night rather than just at sunup.  This may be the actual mating time and therfore it would be about one more month for eggs to be appearing.

3/31/25 – Same behavior of daily activity the last two months but still no eggs! Something new/unprecedented seems to happen every year and this year there possibly may be no eggs unless they step up their game soon….

4/1/25 through 8/24/25 – Same as above! They are in the box every day but no eggs.

8/28/25 – Looks like they got tired of sitting in the box during the 90 to 100 degree heat waves, they no longer are in the box during the day for the last week. But once every couple of days I get a motion detection picture of one visiting the box during the night.

8/29/25 through 10/13/25 – Now there is one owl that comes into the box every day at sunup and stays in all day and leaves at sundown. However, on 9/26 there there were two owls in the box.

10/15/25 through 12/22/25 – No owls in the box during the day and no visits. We can say there was no season 5 for 2025. Hopefully next year there will be some action.

12/23/25 – Camera motion detection shows one owl was in the box at 5:30pm. Then another in the box for a few minutes at 3am on 12/27/25.

1/3/26 through 1/28/26 – One owl visits the box every couple of days at various times of the night.

2/1/26 – Lots of visits every night and now they are bringing in lots of mouse bodies. May have missed any mating but if they are bringing in mice they must have mated.

2/8/26 – Now I saw real time view of 2 owls in the box mating at 8pm making it official…..season 5 has started!

2/9/26 through 2/13/26 – two owls visit every night with multiple mouse bodies being brought in.

2/14/26 – Mama owl now stays in the box after sunup for the first time this year.

2/15/26 through 2/22/26 – Multiple visits every night and sometimes Mama stays in during the day and other times she is gone somewhere else.

2/23/26 – Bingo…first egg is dropped at 1pm and Mama is sitting on it all day long.

2/26/26 – Second egg appears at 10am.
